Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has agreed to a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey this Thursday, potentially setting the stage for a critical step towards peace amid the ongoing conflict. The high-stakes talks come after former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly urged Zelensky to seize the opportunity, calling for immediate dialogue without preconditions.
The proposed meeting, which will take place in Istanbul, was initially suggested by Putin over the weekend. The Russian leader insisted that the discussions must focus on achieving a lasting peace, free from any preliminary demands. This approach marks a significant departure from previous failed negotiations, which have often been derailed by preconditions and mutual distrust.
“We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy. There is no point in prolonging the killings. And I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses,” Zelensky wrote in an X post on Sunday, making his stance clear ahead of the critical summit.
