In what could be one of the most significant data breaches in recent memory, the Social Security numbers of millions of Americans might have been compromised. This alarming situation emerged after a well-known hacking group allegedly stole a massive trove of sensitive personal information from a prominent data broker.
The breach first came to light on April 8, when the cybercriminal group known as USDoD listed a database titled “National Public Data” for sale on a dark web forum. According to a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the database reportedly contains the personal information of a staggering 2.9 billion individuals. The group set the asking price for this highly sensitive data at $3.5 million.
