The feud burst into public view following a tense White House meeting on Wednesday that brought Bondi face-to-face with Bongino, along with FBI Director Kash Patel and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. According to sources, the meeting turned confrontational over suspicions that Bongino and Patel were linked to leaks claiming the FBI was eager to release more Epstein records but had been stymied by the Department of Justice.
Bongino, however, denied having any role in tipping off NewsNation, the outlet that ran the original report. A source familiar with the discussion told CNN that Bongino flatly rejected the accusation. Yet notably, he refused to sign onto a DOJ statement defending the Justice Department’s handling of the matter.
While Bongino has threatened to resign if Bondi stays in her role, insiders stress he hasn’t made a final decision. As CNN noted, “Sources said Bongino hasn’t made a final decision and could still stay in his role.”
Axios first disclosed some details of the fiery encounter.
Meanwhile, frustration inside Trump’s circle—and among his grassroots supporters—is boiling over. Many believe Bondi’s stewardship of the Epstein case has fallen short, fueling suspicions that key figures connected to Epstein remain protected.
Several insiders told CNN that Bongino didn’t report to work Friday, escalating chatter that he may be on his way out. One source added, “The whole thing has been a complete mess and no one is happy.”
The lingering shadow of Jeffrey Epstein continues to cast suspicion across America’s political landscape. The convicted sex offender was awaiting trial for federal sex trafficking when he was discovered unresponsive in his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019. Officially ruled a suicide, Epstein’s death has fueled widespread skepticism, conspiracy theories, and calls for greater transparency.
During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump himself teased the possibility of revealing new Epstein-related documents, a move many of his loyalists believed would expose hidden connections or debunk the government’s version of Epstein’s death.
Yet hopes were crushed this past week when a Department of Justice memo declared there was no murder, no secret “client list,” and no blackmail evidence lurking in the files—a conclusion that has left MAGA circles furious.
Sources say the rift between the DOJ and FBI over how to handle Epstein’s legacy has been festering for months. Conservative activist Laura Loomer added fuel to the fire by blasting Bondi on social media. Loomer claimed Bongino and Patel were “LIVID” with Bondi and hinted Bongino might never return to his post.
She alleged Bongino took the day off, intensifying rumors of his departure.
Seeking to quell the chaos, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stepped in with a firm denial. “The suggestion by anyone that there was any daylight between the FBI and DOJ leadership on this memo’s composition and release is patently false,” Blanche insisted on social media.
The White House echoed his message, with Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields emphasizing that “President Trump has assembled a highly qualified and experienced law and order team dedicated to protecting Americans, holding criminals accountable, and delivering justice to victims.”
“This work is being carried out seamlessly and with unity,” Fields continued. “Any attempt to sow division within this team is baseless and distracts from the real progress being made in restoring public safety and pursuing justice for all.”
Yet for critics, Bondi’s credibility has taken repeated hits. Back in February, she convened a meeting at the White House with pro-Trump influencers and distributed binders supposedly revealing fresh Epstein insights. But much of the material was old news, and even Bondi’s allies admitted the effort fell flat.
Now, as the Epstein saga erupts once more into headlines, Bondi’s fate—and the unity of Trump’s inner circle—hangs in the balance.
Whether Bongino will make good on his threat to resign remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the Epstein files are still generating political aftershocks—and Pam Bondi is right at the center of the storm.
