President Joe Biden’s decision to commute the sentence of former Luzerne County, Pennsylvania judge Michael T. Conahan—infamously tied to the shocking “kids for cash” scandal—has ignited bipartisan outrage and public outcry. The scandal, which involved Conahan accepting bribes in exchange for sentencing minors to privately-owned detention centers, devastated families and shocked the nation.
Conahan, convicted in 2011 and sentenced to over 17 years in federal prison, was among the 1,500 individuals whose sentences were commuted by President Biden this week. Additionally, the president granted 39 pardons to non-violent offenders. However, critics argue that Conahan’s case stands out due to the severity of his crimes and their tragic consequences.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D) sharply criticized the move, declaring at an event, “Biden got it absolutely wrong” in commuting Conahan’s sentence.
