President Donald Trump praised the quick response of federal agents after a terrifying burst of gunfire erupted just steps away from the White House late Saturday night, forcing reporters and staff to scramble for cover in a chilling reminder that the nation’s capital remains under constant threat.
The chaos unfolded shortly after Trump announced that his administration had “largely negotiated” a deal with Iran, adding even more intrigue to an already explosive evening in Washington.
According to witnesses, between 20 and 30 gunshots rang out near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, sending shockwaves through the area surrounding the White House complex. Members of the press pool were immediately ordered to run inside the briefing room as Secret Service agents rushed toward the danger.
One of the most dramatic moments was captured live by ABC News White House correspondent Selina Wang, who was recording a social media video on her iPhone when the shooting suddenly erupted behind her. Wang quickly ducked for safety as gunfire echoed through the streets.
Authorities say the gunman, later identified as 21-year-old Nesire Best, allegedly opened fire toward the White House perimeter multiple times while armed with a pistol. Secret Service agents returned fire within seconds and neutralized the threat before the suspect could advance further.
