Instead, it was mechanically stamped with an autopen — a device typically used when the President is unavailable — and approved by his Chief of Staff, not the Commander-in-Chief himself.
A report from the New York Times has sent the Biden administration into a full-blown meltdown. According to leaked internal communications, the pardon granting Fauci immunity wasn’t signed by Biden personally. Instead, at 10:30 PM on January 19 — just hours before Biden left office — Chief of Staff Jeff Zients authorized the use of an autopen to sign off on the controversial document.
The timeline is damning. At 10:03 PM, a draft memo summarizing the night’s “decisions” was sent to Zients’s assistant. That document was passed around among staffers and finalized at 10:28 PM. Just three minutes later, Zients wrote, “I approve the use of the autopen for the execution of all of the following pardons.”
