Political Connections Raise Red Flags
Michigan campaign finance records reveal that DTE Energy’s political action committee (PAC) contributed over $34,000 to Granholm’s 2006 gubernatorial re-election campaign. Furthermore, Granholm appointed former DTE Energy CEO Stephen Ewing to a key state committee, and Ewing himself donated $3,400 to her campaign in 2004. Meanwhile, Consumers Energy’s PAC funneled $25,000 into Granholm’s political endeavors during her time as governor. The company’s Vice President, Brandon Hofmeister, even served as her climate policy advisor.
Such connections have prompted accusations of favoritism and corruption. Critics argue that Granholm’s decisions were more about rewarding political allies than serving taxpayers’ best interests.
Watchdog Sounds the Alarm
The Department of Energy’s Inspector General, Teri Donaldson, issued a damning report in December highlighting serious concerns within the DOE’s Loan Programs Office. The report stated that the office posed a “significant risk of fraud” and that officials were ignoring conflict-of-interest rules. Donaldson called for an immediate halt to the loan program until compliance with ethical regulations could be ensured.
Despite these warnings, Granholm pressed ahead. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) publicly criticized her actions, stating, “In its final days, the Biden Administration has been shoveling taxpayer money out the door with insufficient safeguards against fraud, waste, and abuse. Secretary of Energy Granholm should immediately stop the entire loan process until the department puts strict safeguards in place to protect American taxpayers.”
A Reckless Spending Spree
During the Biden administration’s lame-duck period, the DOE’s Loan Programs Office distributed nearly $100 billion in loans. Granholm’s efforts to funnel billions to Michigan companies—many of which had close ties to her—have sparked outrage among conservatives and government watchdogs alike.
Critics argue that this spending spree represents a blatant disregard for ethical governance and fiscal responsibility. The sheer speed and volume of the funding allocations have left little room for transparency or accountability, raising concerns about the potential for fraud and waste.

The Aftermath
Granholm’s actions during her final days in office have cast a long shadow over her tenure. As more details emerge about the DOE’s loan program, calls for investigations into potential misconduct are growing louder. For many, this episode serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked government spending and the influence of political connections.
In one of her last acts as Energy Secretary, Jennifer Granholm seemed to prioritize taking care of her old political allies over safeguarding taxpayer dollars. Whether these loans will ultimately deliver the promised benefits to green energy remains to be seen, but the controversy surrounding them is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
