Texas Governor Greg Abbott is drawing a hard line in the sand—and Democrat lawmakers who abandoned their posts to avoid a redistricting vote may be facing the consequences.
In a bold and pointed statement, Abbott warned that Democrats who fled the state in an orchestrated stunt to derail Republican-backed legislation could be ousted from office entirely. This comes after a group of Democrat lawmakers left Texas and traveled to Illinois in an attempt to break quorum and prevent a vote on the GOP-led congressional redistricting plan.
In a move that’s raising eyebrows across the country, Democrat lawmakers in Texas deliberately skipped town to sabotage the legislative process. Their destination? Illinois—a safe haven where they believe they can evade their official duties without facing legal blowback. Their goal: block Republicans from holding a special session that would push through a new redistricting map adding five GOP seats in the U.S. House.
This isn’t the first time Democrats have used this maneuver. In 2021, Texas Democrats pulled the same trick, hopping on a private jet to Washington, D.C., to block election integrity laws. Now, they’re dusting off the same playbook—and Gov. Abbott isn’t having it.
