In a stunning about-face, the U.S. Secret Service has officially pulled the plug on the security clearance renewal for its former Director Kimberly Cheatle—just weeks after her mishandling of Donald Trump’s security came under intense fire.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran, who was appointed under the Trump administration, rescinded Cheatle’s clearance renewal amid rising pressure and scrutiny. The change of course came shortly after RealClearPolitics inquired about Senator Ron Johnson’s vocal opposition to Cheatle retaining any classified access.
According to RealClearPolitics, sources within the agency revealed that Cheatle’s clearance was on track to be renewed—until they began pressing the agency on Johnson’s objections. That inquiry reportedly triggered internal reconsideration and a sharp reversal.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who leads the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and previously chaired the full Homeland Security Committee, didn’t mince words.
