President Trump has taken a major step in his immigration crackdown, officially revoking deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitian nationals. The move rolls back a Biden-era policy that critics say was used to shield illegal migrants under the guise of humanitarian protection.
DHS Secretary Kris Noem announced the reversal, stating that the Biden administration’s 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians was an abuse of the system. “President Trump and I are returning TPS to its original status: temporary,” Noem declared.

With this decision, tens of thousands of Haitian nationals will see their deportation protections expire by August, months earlier than previously scheduled. The Department of Homeland Security noted that TPS had been continuously extended for Haitian nationals since 2010, allowing over half a million to remain in the U.S. despite the program being designed for short-term relief.
