Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stirred controversy this week by drawing parallels between the “America First” slogan and rhetoric from the 1930s. In an interview with The Financial Times, the longtime Republican lawmaker warned of the dangers of isolationism, likening current sentiments to those expressed in the lead-up to World War II.

“We’re in a very, very dangerous world right now, reminiscent of before World War Two,” McConnell said. “Even the slogan is the same: ‘America First.’ That was what they said in the ’30s.”
