Republican vice-presidential nominee Senator J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, took center stage in Tuesday night’s CBS News Vice Presidential Debate, making headlines for his firm stance on immigration and its impact on U.S. housing costs. The debate, moderated by CBS journalists Margaret Brennan and Norah O’Donnell, saw Vance defend his claims, backing them up with hard data after being challenged on the spot.
During the debate, Vance asserted that increased immigration had directly contributed to rising housing costs across the United States, particularly in regions with already limited housing inventory. His remarks triggered a quick attempt by the moderators to “fact-check” his claims live on air, a tactic commonly seen in recent political debates. Despite the pushback, Vance stood his ground, promising to provide evidence supporting his argument.

After the debate, Vance followed through on his promise, taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share several studies and direct quotes supporting his point. One notable citation came from Michelle Bowman, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Vance tweeted, “Here is Michelle Bowman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors: ‘Given the current low inventory of affordable housing, the inflow of new immigrants to some geographic areas could result in upward pressure on rents.’”
