California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, describing the federal inquiry as politically motivated.
The Democratic governor made the announcement in a post on X, where he claimed the investigation is aimed at damaging him politically rather than uncovering criminal wrongdoing.
“Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us. They have not found a crime — they are simply trying to find one,” Newsom wrote.
The governor also suggested the inquiry is connected to his potential national political ambitions rather than his actions in office.
“He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President,” Newsom said.
