Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar has officially announced that she will seek re-election next year, setting the stage for what is expected to be another closely watched and highly controversial campaign in her Minneapolis-based congressional district.
First elected in 2018, Omar is now preparing to run for a fifth term representing a district that includes Minneapolis and several nearby inner-ring suburbs. While she continues to maintain strong support among her progressive base, renewed scrutiny surrounding her finances and long-running allegations tied to her political and personal history are once again surfacing as she enters the campaign cycle.
In her official statement announcing the bid for re-election, Omar framed the upcoming election as a broader ideological fight against Republican leadership in Washington.
