A cyberwar that once seemed confined to computer screens may be entering a far more dangerous phase.
The Iran-linked hacking organization known as Handala is once again making headlines after issuing alarming threats tied to the upcoming FIFA World Cup events hosted in the United States. The group, which has already been connected to major cyberattacks against American targets, now claims it has gained access to FBI surveillance systems and is openly warning international teams that they could become targets.
Whether every aspect of the group’s latest claims is true remains under investigation. What is undeniable, however, is that Handala has already demonstrated its ability to inflict significant damage inside the United States.
A Record of High-Profile Attacks
Handala is not an unknown name in cybersecurity circles.
Earlier this year, the group allegedly carried out a devastating attack against medical technology giant Stryker Corporation. According to reports, more than 200,000 employee devices were affected when attackers remotely erased critical data from company systems.
The consequences reportedly extended well beyond corporate offices.
