A chilling federal terrorism case is shining a spotlight on just how far radical Islamist extremism has reached inside the United States.
Federal authorities announced the arrest of three American citizens accused of helping support ISIS operations, including alleged plans involving drone attacks against U.S. military personnel stationed overseas.
The suspects, identified as 21-year-old Bisaam Ghafoor of Kansas, 21-year-old Elias Shamsaldeen of California, and 25-year-old Bereen Dzayee of California, were taken into custody on June 5 following a lengthy federal investigation.
According to court documents, investigators believe the three men actively coordinated with someone they thought was affiliated with ISIS and provided financial support intended to help carry out attacks against American servicemembers.
The arrests took place in Kansas City, San Diego, and Sacramento as federal agents moved to dismantle what officials describe as a growing terror support network operating through online platforms.
Authorities say the defendants used Discord, voice chats, encrypted messaging applications, and social media groups to communicate about assisting ISIS. Prosecutors allege the conversations stretched over more than a year and included discussions about funding operations, recruiting support, and potentially traveling abroad to join the terrorist organization.
