A year after a federal laboratory employee seemingly disappeared without a trace, the discovery of her remains deep in a remote New Mexico forest is raising even more questions than answers.
Now, grieving relatives are openly challenging suggestions that the case may have been a suicide and are demanding a closer look at what they believe are troubling inconsistencies surrounding her disappearance.
Melissa Casias, a 54-year-old employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory, vanished in June 2025 under circumstances that her family says never made sense from the beginning.
According to relatives, Casias was last seen after stopping by her daughter’s home before she failed to report for work. Then she seemingly disappeared. Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Yet despite extensive efforts to locate her, there was no sign of the longtime laboratory employee.
That changed over the weekend when a hiker made a grim discovery in the rugged McGaffey Ridge region of Carson National Forest.
New Mexico State Police later confirmed the remains belonged to Casias, bringing an end to a year-long search that had attracted growing public attention.
