The Washington Post recently described White House press briefings as a “threat to democracy,” but Tuesday’s briefing featuring Vice President JD Vance quickly turned into a very different kind of headline story—one that left several members of the press scrambling to regain footing after an unusually pointed exchange.
Vance held his first solo briefing of the administration, and from the opening moments it was clear the tone would not follow the familiar script. One reporter delivered what amounted to a lengthy, pre-loaded monologue instead of a straightforward question—stretching nearly a full minute and a half while laying out accusations about President Trump’s financial dealings and alleged stock activity.
The exchange reached its peak when Vance finally responded.
“There are different ways to ask a question,” Vance said. “You can just ask a question, try to get your answer – or you could do like a speech where you say ‘You know, Mr. Vice President, you’re a terrible human being and so is the president.’”
