For months, Frey and other Democrat officials wrapped themselves in carefully crafted language about “protecting immigrant communities” while anti-ICE demonstrations spiraled into violence across major American cities. But now, critics say Frey finally dropped the mask and admitted what the movement was really about: stopping federal immigration enforcement altogether.
The controversy exploded after Frey made remarks during a May 19 public appearance tied to ongoing unrest surrounding ICE operations in Minneapolis. While attempting to defend demonstrators, the mayor made a statement that instantly caught the attention of conservatives and legal observers alike.
“The goal here was not just to have ICE and Border Patrol leave Minneapolis and go to terrorize some other city,” Frey declared. “The goal, and every single person felt it deeply, to stop ICE and Border Patrol in their tracks.”
To many Americans, that did not sound like political rhetoric.
It sounded like a confession.
Conservatives immediately pointed to federal law, specifically 18 U.S.C. § 372, which makes it a crime to conspire to prevent federal officers from carrying out their duties. Legal analysts close to the Trump administration argue Frey’s own words could now become central evidence in a growing Department of Justice investigation already targeting sanctuary city officials accused of interfering with federal immigration enforcement.
