The terrifying scene unfolded in broad daylight in Texas when a father traveling with his wife and children was suddenly forced into a life-or-death decision during a violent attempted carjacking that authorities say happened in a matter of seconds.
According to police, the suspect — an illegal immigrant from Mexico — was shot and killed after allegedly attacking a father and attempting to steal the family’s vehicle while several children, including a baby, were still inside.
The dramatic incident, which was captured on surveillance video, has sparked outrage online and renewed debate over border security and violent crime involving illegal immigrants.
Police in Garland, Texas, said officers were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. Sunday following reports of a major crash involving a vehicle that slammed into two other cars. Investigators later identified the suspect as 30-year-old Jose Ramirez.
