Former Attorney General Eric Holder is once again making headlines, but not just for his recent media appearance. During an interview on MSNBC, Holder accused Republicans of undermining democratic institutions. The remarks quickly sparked backlash, with critics pointing to his own past and current political activities as deeply contradictory.
Holder’s critics have long referenced his role in the controversial “Fast and Furious” operation, a federal gun-tracking program that went disastrously wrong. In 2012, Holder became the first sitting Cabinet official ever held in contempt of Congress after refusing to fully comply with subpoenas related to the operation. Lawmakers were investigating how thousands of firearms ended up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels, with devastating consequences.
One of the most tragic outcomes tied to the operation was the death of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Weapons linked to the program were reportedly found at the scene. Lawmakers demanded answers, but according to congressional investigators, many of the documents they received were heavily redacted, limiting their ability to fully understand what happened. Then-President Barack Obama later invoked executive privilege over additional materials, further fueling frustration among investigators.
