In a bold and unprecedented move, a U.S. Navy submarine torpedoed and sank a high-value Iranian warship during Operation Epic Fury, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday. Hegseth described the attack as a historic first since World War II.
“An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters,” Hegseth said. “Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death. The first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War Two. Like in that war, back when we were still the War Department. We are fighting to win.”
Hegseth made the announcement alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine at the Pentagon, where officials detailed the precision and effectiveness of the strike. According to Caine, the attack relied on a single Mark 48 torpedo deployed by a fast-attack Navy submarine.
An Iranian warship was “effectively neutralized,” Caine confirmed, with the torpedo delivering “immediate effect, sending the warship to the bottom of the sea.”
