California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation that drove two major refineries out of the state and blocked over 1,400 drilling permits, all while leaving 1.7 billion barrels of domestic oil untouched in the ground.
Despite these self-inflicted energy hurdles, Newsom’s taxpayer-funded press office took to X on Saturday to lecture former President Donald Trump about rising gas prices.
The Post That Backfired
In what appeared to be a jab at Trump, Newsom’s official account claimed California gas prices had “stayed below $5 for nearly two years” and warned that “Trump’s new war is already rattling markets.” The post immediately drew national attention—but not for the reason Newsom hoped.
The response was swift and unflinching. The US Oil and Gas Association fired back, taking the governor’s press office to task.
