One location, the so-called Quality Learning Center, couldn’t even spell “Learning” correctly on its sign — which read “Learing.” Despite that glaring red flag, the facility was reportedly licensed for 99 children and received approximately $1.9 million in taxpayer funds in 2025.
A nearby resident told Shirley that no children had been seen at the location for over eight years.
That single visit raised disturbing questions — and it wasn’t an isolated case.
As Shirley continued documenting what he encountered, the scope of the alleged fraud became impossible to ignore. In one day of reporting, Shirley says he uncovered evidence pointing to more than $100 million in questionable funding, all flowing through a system that was supposedly being monitored by state and federal authorities.
Once the video exploded online, federal law enforcement suddenly found the urgency the media lacked.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the Bureau had already “surged” investigative resources into Minnesota.
“The FBI believes this is just the tip of a very large iceberg,” Patel posted.
Federal prosecutors have already alleged that half or more of the $18 billion in federal funds sent to Minnesota since 2018 may have been stolen. Even more alarming, court records indicate that 82 of the 92 defendants charged in the sprawling case are Somali Americans.
A source told Fox News that “the largest funder of al-Shabab is the Minnesota taxpayer” — a chilling statement given that al-Shabab is an al Qaeda–affiliated terrorist organization.
For years, critics say, Democrat leadership in Minnesota — including Governor Tim Walz — ignored obvious warning signs while taxpayer money poured out the door.
But while Shirley was doing the work legacy media refused to do, Politico’s reaction was nothing short of astonishing.
Politico senior legal affairs reporter Josh Gerstein took to social media with a post that immediately triggered backlash.
“At some point, the amateur effort to knock on doors of home daycares intersects with robust stand-your-ground laws,” Gerstein wrote Monday night.
Read that again.
Rather than condemning fraud or calling for accountability, a senior Politico reporter appeared to suggest that journalists investigating daycare fraud could face deadly force — and that it might be legally justified.
The response was swift.
“‘It’s legal to shoot journalists’ is certainly an interesting take from Politico,” author Daniel Friedman responded.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement went even further, accusing Gerstein of promoting violence.
“You would think a ‘Senior Legal Affairs Reporter’ for POLITICO would know better than to tweet something inciting violence,” ICE posted.
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck publicly questioned whether Minnesota’s gun laws were the reason Politico never bothered investigating the fraud in the first place.
It got worse.
Minnesota does not have stand-your-ground laws. State law requires a duty to retreat if it can be done safely. Legal experts quickly pointed out that Gerstein appeared to be confusing stand-your-ground statutes with Castle Doctrine — two very different legal concepts.
Radio host Pete Kaliner summed it up bluntly:
“Shouldn’t a legal affairs reporter know the difference between stand-your-ground law and castle doctrine?”
When critics corrected him, Gerstein doubled down, replying, “Not in your home” — further muddying the legal waters.
At best, Politico’s senior legal reporter showed a stunning lack of legal knowledge. At worst, critics argue, he floated the idea that independent journalists investigating government corruption might deserve violent retaliation.
Either explanation is deeply disturbing.
Nick Shirley embarrassed the media by doing real journalism — asking questions, visiting locations, and following the money. For that, instead of praise or verification, he got thinly veiled threats from the press corps that failed to do its job.
The same outlets that ignored massive fraud, shrugged at possible terror financing, and protected Democrat officials for years suddenly sprang into action — not to investigate, but to attack the man who exposed it.
This is why trust in the mainstream media is collapsing. When corruption threatens Democrats, they don’t investigate. They deflect, smear, and intimidate.
The mask didn’t just slip — it shattered. And what’s underneath is far uglier than anyone wanted to admit.
