The most infuriating part of this tragedy? It was completely preventable. Gonzales first crossed into the U.S. illegally back in 2008. Instead of being deported, he was granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a program Democrats have repeatedly used to shield illegal aliens from removal.
But Gonzales didn’t even keep that protection. His TPS was revoked in 2015, meaning he has been living in America unlawfully for nearly a decade. On top of that, he already had a criminal record, including a prior vandalism conviction.
So let’s be honest—the system failed miserably. A man with no right to be here, no license, and a criminal history was allowed to stay. That failure ended in Raquel’s death and left Marco fighting for his life.
Unlike the Biden administration, which dodges responsibility every time an illegal alien commits a crime, Trump officials are calling it exactly what it is.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed to Fox News that Gonzales is in the country illegally and that his protection status had been revoked nearly ten years ago. But DHS didn’t stop there. They issued a blistering statement, pulling no punches:
“Herrera Gonzales drove drunk and killed Raquel Lorena Sarabia Barajas and left her husband Marco Antonio Baez Del Angel fighting for his life.”
“This criminal illegal is charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, DUI, and driving without a license.”
Unlike left-wing bureaucrats who dance around the truth, DHS labeled Gonzales for what he is—a criminal illegal. ICE immediately issued an arrest detainer on August 23, making sure this killer doesn’t slip through the cracks and end up back in American neighborhoods.
The DHS statement went even further, exposing the reality that too many politicians ignore:
“It seems to be almost a daily occurrence where an illegal alien driving kills innocent Americans. All of these deaths are preventable because these illegal aliens should have NEVER been in our country.”
This isn’t an isolated event. Across the country, families are being torn apart by crimes committed by people who should never have been allowed inside our borders.
Raquel’s family will never see her again. Marco may survive, but his life will never be the same. And what makes it worse is that none of this had to happen. If immigration laws were enforced, Gonzales would have been deported years ago.
Instead, he was free to drive around Nashville in a luxury car while unlawfully in the country—a shocking indictment of how broken the system became under previous administrations.
The Trump administration is making it clear that they’re prioritizing American lives over the feelings of illegal aliens. Their statement concluded with a promise that stands in stark contrast to the weak excuses we’ve heard in the past:
“President Trump and Secretary Noem will continue to stand with the victims of illegal alien crime and their families.”
That’s not just campaign talk—it’s a commitment to securing the border and preventing future tragedies.
Gonzales now faces charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, DUI, and driving without a license. But no sentence will ever undo the pain inflicted on Raquel’s loved ones or restore what was stolen.
The only real solution is to enforce immigration law, close the loopholes, and put American safety first. Until that happens, more families will pay the price for Washington’s failures.
And that’s why this administration isn’t backing down—they’re taking action, one criminal illegal alien at a time.
