Cornyn didn’t hold back in his criticism, adding, “We cannot allow these rogue legislators to avoid their constitutional responsibilities.”

Texas had already issued civil arrest warrants for the absent Democrats, but the reality was that without federal cooperation, capturing them beyond state borders would have been nearly impossible. Without the FBI’s involvement, the showdown could have quickly devolved into a messy power struggle between rival state and local jurisdictions.
The Democrats’ flight was sparked by a Republican-backed plan to redraw congressional districts—an initiative strongly supported by President Donald Trump. If passed, the new maps could deliver between five and ten new GOP-leaning seats in Washington. When it became clear the bill had enough votes to pass, Democrats bolted, robbing the Texas legislature of the quorum needed to move forward.

In Boston, where several Texas Democrats have set up camp, the group held a press conference to frame themselves as defenders of democracy. Texas State Senator Carol Alvarado issued a dire warning for other states.
“We came to Boston to remind America; we don’t have a king here. We have a Constitution,” Alvarado told the gathered crowd. “We’re here to say Texas will not go quietly into the night and neither should you.”
She doubled down, telling CBS News: “If it can happen in Texas, the second largest state in the country, it will happen elsewhere. This is not a one-off. This is a blueprint. If we do not stop it now, they’ll copy and paste it across the country.”
Back in Texas, House Democratic leader Gene Wu has been busy raising money to bankroll the group’s extended stay outside the state. He’s urging Americans sympathetic to their cause to chip in, saying the money will help cover daily living expenses—especially since each lawmaker faces fines of up to $500 per day for skipping work.
“We’re getting a lot of small-dollar donations,” Wu told the Associated Press, “and that’s going to be used to help keep this thing going.”
For Republicans, the Democrats’ dramatic flight is nothing more than an attempt to derail the will of Texas voters. For Democrats, it’s a high-stakes political stand. But now—with the FBI on the case—the clock is ticking for the runaway lawmakers.
