The standoff in Texas over a Republican-led redistricting effort has escalated to a whole new level. Federal agents are now set to assist in tracking down runaway Democratic lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State to block a bill that could give Republicans a significant boost in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The development was announced by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who confirmed that the FBI will be joining the search. This comes just days after Texas Republicans gave state authorities the green light to travel into Democrat strongholds such as Chicago and Boston to locate and arrest the missing legislators. These Democrats have been hiding out with help from left-leaning governors and mayors eager to shield them from facing consequences.
While officials have not confirmed whether FBI teams are already in Chicago—the city where most of the fleeing lawmakers have taken refuge—many of these Democrats have been quite visible. They’ve given interviews and held press events, bragging that Texas authorities can’t touch them outside state lines.
“I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the F.B.I. to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,” Cornyn told the New York Times. “I thank President Trump and Director Patel for supporting and swiftly acting on my call for the federal government to hold these supposed lawmakers accountable.”
