In a dramatic move set to reshape the political battleground in 2026, Texas lawmakers have advanced a powerful new redistricting proposal that could grant Republicans up to five additional congressional seats — and spark a showdown with the Biden DOJ.
Late Saturday, the Texas House redistricting committee pushed through a new map on a 12-6 party-line vote, paving the way for a floor showdown as early as Tuesday. If passed, the new map could eliminate three Democrat-leaning districts and tilt two more decisively red — a seismic shift in one of the most hotly contested political arenas in America.
Governor Greg Abbott had signaled this fight was coming, making redistricting a top item in the legislature’s special session. With Republicans holding the reins, the new map would dilute Democrat voter concentrations in heavily blue urban centers like Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio — forcing Democrats to play defense in areas once considered safe.
