Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has officially hit pause on the Senate’s summer vacation—and the reason is raising eyebrows across Washington.
Instead of heading home for the traditional August recess, Senate Republicans are digging in for a confirmation blitz, hoping to bulldoze through President Donald Trump’s massive backlog of judicial and executive branch nominees. The move comes amid fierce Democrat obstruction, rising conservative frustration, and direct pressure from Trump himself.
Thune made the call late Friday, reportedly telling lawmakers they’ll be staying in Washington—at least through the weekend—to tackle the logjam of confirmations that’s been slowing Trump’s agenda.
“Thune said he would keep the Senate in session at least this weekend to work on the confirmations and to negotiate with Democrats to speed up consideration of dozens of nominees,” Just The News reported. “However, he said some of the negotiations will be done between the White House and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.”
