An alarming scene unfolded late Friday in North Texas when a police officer was shot during what authorities are describing as a coordinated assault on a federal detention facility, raising fresh questions about escalating violence targeting federal institutions across the country.
Shortly after 11 p.m., officers with the Alvarado Police Department responded to the Prairieland Detention Center in Johnson County after reports of a suspicious person lurking outside the facility and believed to be armed. But what started as a routine call exploded into a gun battle, leaving one officer shot in the neck and requiring emergency air transport to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.
Thankfully, the officer survived the ordeal and has since been released from medical care, but the terrifying events signal a worrying trend of violence aimed at government sites.
