CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten highlighted some significant trends in a recent segment, suggesting that former President Donald Trump may have the upper hand in a potential face-off against Vice President Kamala Harris. Enten pointed to multiple indicators—including voter dissatisfaction, President Joe Biden’s unpopularity, and a boost in Republican registration—that seem to signal a likely Trump victory if the match-up were to happen.
Trump is currently leading Harris by a slim margin in six out of seven key battleground states, according to RealClearPolitics averages. But Enten’s analysis on “CNN News Central” emphasized that the political climate could favor Trump even more by Election Day. Enten explained, “Just 28% of Americans, voters, think the country is going in the right direction, is on the right track.” He added a historical perspective: “What’s the average percentage of the public that thinks that the country is on the right track when the incumbent party loses? It’s 25%.”

For Enten, this 28% statistic resonates with past election cycles where voters largely expressed dissatisfaction with the party in power. “It doesn’t look anything like this 42% [average when the incumbent party won]. So, the bottom line is very few Americans think the country is on the right track at this particular point,” Enten added, noting that the number is closer to when the incumbent party has historically lost.
