A University of Michigan student from China is now entangled in legal troubles after allegedly voting illegally in Ann Arbor. Despite not being a U.S. citizen, the student reportedly used his UM student ID and various residency documents to register to vote in an early voting site near campus.
Michigan’s Secretary of State office disclosed that the student signed an affidavit falsely declaring U.S. citizenship, a critical requirement for voter eligibility. He now faces charges for perjury and unauthorized voting. However, his vote, already processed by a tabulator, is expected to be counted in Michigan’s election happening in six days.

On Wednesday, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office, in coordination with Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, announced the charges. Although officials withheld the student’s identity, they referred to him as “a non-U.S. citizen,” which was first reported by The Detroit News.
