A dramatic international showdown is unfolding, but according to one World Series champion, the real controversy isn’t on the field—it’s in the press box.
Following Team USA’s hard-fought 2–1 win over the Dominican Republic, a growing backlash has erupted over how major sports media outlets chose to frame the game. Instead of celebrating a tightly contested victory by the Americans, much of the coverage zeroed in on a disputed strike call that ended the game.
And that did not sit well with former Boston Red Sox champion Doug Mientkiewicz.
The veteran first baseman, who has long been involved in the international baseball scene, took to social media to call out what he sees as a troubling trend in sports coverage.
“It’s a sad day when people who were born here and make a living in this country actually make excuses for a team losing and hoping the USA doesn’t win,” he wrote on X.
“You can cover the games without bias. It was a great game, showcasing the best talent in the world. It had everything – it had mistakes, and everything in between. This is what makes baseball the greatest game in the world.”
