President Donald Trump has spent the past several weeks orchestrating what many are calling one of the most aggressive military campaigns in modern history. But this week, an unexpected move by a key ally threatened to derail everything.
Israel launched a strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, the largest natural gas reserve on the planet. The move caught Washington off guard and triggered a chain reaction that is now sending shockwaves through global energy markets and geopolitical alliances.
According to Trump, the United States had no prior knowledge of the strike.
“Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran,” Trump posted. “The United States knew nothing about this particular attack, and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it.”
That distinction mattered little to Iran.
In swift retaliation, Tehran launched missile strikes targeting Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to the largest liquefied natural gas facility in the world. The damage was immediate and severe. QatarEnergy confirmed extensive destruction, with roughly 17% of the country’s LNG export capacity wiped out. Financial losses are estimated at $20 billion annually, and recovery could take up to five years.
