A Washington State University instructor is out of a job—and a graduate student has lost his teaching privileges—after a shocking video emerged showing the brutal assault of an Asian-American student wearing a MAGA hat. The incident, which took place on a cold night in February 2025, has sparked national outrage and renewed concerns over political violence on college campuses.
Jay Sani, a 28-year-old engineering student of Indian descent, had just left a local bar when he was ambushed. What followed was captured on surveillance footage and now serves as damning evidence of the politically charged aggression that unfolded.

Two individuals—Patrick Mahoney, a university instructor with outspoken views on Middle Eastern politics, and Gerald Hoff, a graduate student and teaching assistant—confronted Sani after noticing his red “Make America Great Again” hat.
While it’s still unclear what words were exchanged, the video paints a grim picture. Mahoney lunged at Sani, tore the hat from his head, and initiated the attack. Hoff soon joined in, and within seconds, the two had Sani on the ground. Blows rained down on the student, and as he lay bleeding, the beating continued—Mahoney and Hoff kicked him while he was defenseless.
