A Democrat judge in New Mexico is at the center of a growing scandal after federal agents raided a property linked to him—uncovering a Venezuelan illegal alien reportedly tied to one of the most dangerous transnational gangs in the Western Hemisphere.
Joel Cano, a longtime magistrate judge in Doña Ana County and a former police officer, abruptly resigned just days after Homeland Security agents arrested a 23-year-old man connected to the notorious Tren de Aragua gang—a violent criminal enterprise that originated in Venezuela and has spread rapidly across Latin America and into the United States.

Feds Drop the Hammer
The resignation came after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents executed a raid on a Las Cruces residence owned by Cano and his wife, Nancy. There, authorities arrested Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, a Venezuelan national who had entered the U.S. illegally and was allegedly in possession of multiple firearms.
According to HSI, Ortega-Lopez became the subject of an investigation in January 2025, after the agency received an anonymous tip. Ortega-Lopez, authorities say, had been residing in New Mexico with other illegal aliens and was seen in disturbing videos and images brandishing firearms—some of which reportedly surfaced on social media platforms.
