In a stunning turn early Saturday morning, the Supreme Court stepped in to halt President Donald Trump’s push to deport illegal Venezuelan nationals tied to violent foreign gangs under the historic Alien Enemies Act — a move now paused by the high court despite national security concerns.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a group known for consistently opposing immigration enforcement, scrambled to the Supreme Court with an emergency application after learning that federal officials were moving forward with deportations. The deportations targeted Venezuelans detained in Texas, specifically those with alleged links to the notorious Tren de Aragua gang.

The high court issued a brief, unsigned order siding with the ACLU — stopping the deportations from proceeding for now. This despite the fact that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals had not yet weighed in on the matter.
The Supreme Court’s order read:
“The Government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this Court. See 28 U. S. C. §1651(a). Justice Thomas and Justice Alito dissent from the Court’s order.”
