Gunman Killed After Firing at White House Checkpoint

The shooting scare just outside the White House on Saturday night sent shockwaves through Washington and reignited serious concerns about security surrounding America’s most protected building. Federal authorities have now identified the suspected gunman as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland after a deadly confrontation with United States Secret Service agents near the executive mansion.

According to multiple reports, the incident unfolded around 6 p.m. near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just steps from the White House complex. Officials say the suspect approached a Secret Service security checkpoint carrying a bag before suddenly pulling out a handgun and opening fire toward officers stationed nearby.

Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told reporters that the suspect allegedly fired several rounds in the direction of the White House grounds before Secret Service personnel responded with deadly force. The exchange ended with the suspect being fatally shot at the scene.
