Mamdani, a self-styled progressive crusader, says he’s entering the meeting with President Donald Trump focused on three areas: public safety, economic security, and what he calls “the affordability agenda that over 1 million New Yorkers voted for.” But critics warn that his version of “affordability” looks less like relief and more like a sledgehammer aimed at landlords, businesses, and taxpayers.
A Progressive Agenda Wrapped in Crisis Messaging
Mamdani has spent his first days as mayor-elect hammering one message: New York’s streets aren’t safe, and he plans to fix it — but not in the way most residents are expecting. On Wednesday, he confirmed NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch will remain in her position, a move pushed heavily by Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is desperate to prove to the Trump administration that the city can manage its own chaos.
