“Workers are missing paychecks; travelers are missing flights; businesses are struggling; military families are forced to rely on food pantries; but to Chuck Schumer that means ‘every day gets better,’” Jackson continued. “No matter what Chuck Schumer thinks, Americans struggling is not good, and the Democrats must stop inflicting this pain on them and reopen the government now.”
A “Disgusting” Remark
President Donald Trump personally weighed in, calling Schumer’s remark “disgusting” and accusing him of “holding the entire federal government hostage.”
During a Thursday Cabinet meeting, Trump unleashed: “Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries and the Congressional Democrats are holding the entire federal government hostage. He’s terrified AOC is going to run against him, and she probably will. His numbers are terrible — I don’t think he makes it another term.”
The president’s comments reflect growing frustration inside the White House as the shutdown enters its third week. Federal agencies remain shuttered, thousands of workers have been furloughed, and there’s no sign Democrats plan to budge.
Democrats on Defense
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the outrage, accusing Schumer of celebrating American hardship.
“While federal workers stress over missed paychecks, military families turn to food pantries, and airports face delays — Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are bragging that ‘every day gets better’ for them,” Leavitt wrote on X. “What a disgusting and revealing statement. Democrats are gleeful about inflicting pain on the American people.”
Schumer’s office tried to spin his words, providing Fox News Digital with a partial transcript of his Senate floor remarks claiming his intent was misunderstood.
“Every day that Republicans refuse to negotiate to end this shutdown, the worse it gets for Americans — and the clearer it becomes who’s fighting for them,” Schumer said. “Each day our case to fix healthcare and end this shutdown gets better and better because families are seeing how high their premiums will climb if Republicans get their way.”
But few are buying that explanation. To many, it sounded like damage control after a Freudian slip that revealed Democrats’ true political calculus — that pain for ordinary Americans equals political opportunity for the Left.
White House Raises the Stakes
The administration is now exploring options to pressure Democrats even further. According to Fox News Digital, the Office of Management and Budget has floated a proposal to end guaranteed backpay for furloughed workers, reversing a 2019 law signed during Trump’s first term.
If enacted, tens of thousands of federal employees could permanently lose wages as the shutdown drags on — a move aimed squarely at forcing Democrats to the negotiating table.
“The Democrats are playing games while Americans suffer,” a senior White House official said. “They’re not negotiating in good faith. But this time, the American people see exactly who’s responsible.”
Political Fallout Looms
The longer this shutdown continues, the more Democrats risk alienating voters tired of political gamesmanship. Schumer’s “every day gets better” line may go down as the defining quote of the standoff — a soundbite that perfectly captures Washington’s arrogance and detachment from reality.
While families scramble to pay bills and servicemembers visit food banks, the Democratic leader of the U.S. Senate is boasting about how “every day gets better” for his party.
That may not just be “disgusting,” as Trump put it — it might be politically suicidal.
