Virginia Democrat Rep. Abigail Spanberger found herself under fire during a tense debate moment Thursday night after repeatedly refusing to say whether she would pull her endorsement of Democrat attorney general nominee Jay Jones — who was caught in shocking text messages threatening to shoot a Republican lawmaker and his family.
Violent Threats Surface From Democrat Nominee
According to National Review, in 2022 text messages to a colleague, Jones wrote that he wanted to put “two bullets” in the head of then–Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert. He later doubled down and allegedly threatened Gilbert’s wife and children over the phone.
“I’ve told you this before. Only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy,” Jones said in the exchange. He then went further, saying, “I mean do I think Todd and Jennifer are evil? And that they’re breeding little fascists? Yes.”
Despite the disturbing nature of those comments, Spanberger has stopped short of calling on Jones to withdraw from the race.
