New York Attorney General Letitia James, one of the loudest voices behind the Democrat-led crusade against Donald Trump, is now facing her own day of reckoning. On Thursday night, Lindsey Halligan, acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, unsealed a federal indictment charging James with bank fraud and making false claims to a financial institution—crimes that could send her to prison for up to 60 years and cost her $2 million in fines.
Federal Prosecutors: “No One Is Above the Law”
The indictment paints a devastating picture of corruption and hypocrisy at the highest levels of state power.
“No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public’s trust,” Halligan said. “The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served.”
The Virginia Property at the Center of It All
The case revolves around a single-family home in Norfolk, Virginia, which James co-purchased in August 2020 for about $137,000. Prosecutors say she lied on loan documents, claiming she intended to live in the property as her primary residence—a false declaration that allowed her to receive special loan terms reserved for homeowners rather than investors.
