Catholic leaders in Minnesota had been sounding the alarm for years about the dangers facing private and religious schools. They begged Governor Tim Walz to act. He didn’t. Now, tragedy has struck.
A resurfaced letter sent to Walz in April 2023 paints a chilling picture. Catholic and other nonpublic school leaders warned that their students were in “urgent and critical need” of protection. They even declared bluntly: “Our schools are under attack.”
That dire message went unheeded. Two years later, their fears became reality when a gunman stormed a Catholic school in Minneapolis during Mass, killing two and injuring seventeen.
The Letter That Could Have Saved Lives
The letter was co-signed by Tim Benz, president of the private school advocacy group MINNDEPENDENT, and Jason Adkins, executive director of the Minnesota Catholic Conference. It was first published by the Daily Wire and remains publicly available on the Minnesota Catholic Conference’s website.
