When Ronna McDaniel steps down as chair of the Republican National Committee later this month, Donald Trump has quietly stated that he plans to back a significant ally.
Michael Whatley, the chairman of the state GOP in North Carolina, was appointed, guaranteeing President Trump’s support in 2020 for an ally who fervently believes in his allegations of election fraud. Whatley is particularly appealing to the former president because to his reputation as a “stop the steal guy” supporter and his claim that he delivered the state to Trump in 2020, according to associates who talked with media outlets on Tuesday.

Since taking over the party in 2017, McDaniel has come under heavy fire for his poor fundraising and scant attention to election integrity. She told President Trump she was resigning on Tuesday night, February 25th, after their private meeting at Mar-a-Lago. On Truth Social, Trump alluded to impending RNC leadership changes and McDaniel’s exit.

He thanked McDaniel, “now Head of the RNC, and I’ll be making a decision the day after the South Carolina Primary as to my recommendations for RNC Growth.”
Whatley has guided the NCGOP to supermajorities in the state assembly since 2019, and she easily won reelection in 2021 and 2023. Colleagues from North Carolina quickly hailed Trump’s choice.
“If the news is true, I honor the service of Ronna McDaniel and thank her for her strong efforts; I fully endorse Michael Whatley as the next RNC chairman,” stated Susan Mills, the vice chair of the NC Republican Party and a close supporter of Whatley, in a special interview with Carolina Journal.
“As we’ve seen in North Carolina Chairman Whatley can bring Trump to victory and will do so in 2024,” Mills added. “I stood side by side with Whatley as we won North Carolina for Trump in 2020, elected a Republican Supreme Court, regained legislative supermajorities, and elected Ted Budd to the United States Senate. I look forward to continuing our legacy of success.”
Reelection pledges made by McDaniel to court wealthy contributors turned off by a possible Trump 2024 campaign failed because the RNC saw three years in a row of out-of-control spending. Recent records reveal that the RNC was unable to compete due to Trump’s strong support from small-dollar contributors, with just over $8 million in cash on hand compared to $1.8 million in debt. This is little compared to the financial resources of the Democratic Party.
Still, Whatley faces a formidable challenge in trying to win over a large number of McDaniel’s supporters inside the 186-member council. Majority of the committee voted for McDaniel in a covert 2023 vote against Harmeet Dhillon, who firmly allied herself with President Trump’s MAGA camp. Whatley also needs to build contacts with Turning Point USA. Charlie Kirk, the thirty-year-old creator of the group, has made it a priority to use large sums to push for McDaniel’s dismissal.
