Emergency Talks as the Clock Ticked Down
As the deadline approached, American and Russian negotiators rushed into closed-door discussions in Abu Dhabi. The meetings took place alongside separate negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, underscoring how tightly global security issues are now intertwined.
Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian officials to explore a short-term extension of New START, possibly lasting six months. The idea was simple: buy time before the treaty collapses completely.
