In a significant win for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and former President Donald Trump, courts in Michigan and North Carolina have ruled to remove Kennedy’s name from the presidential ballots, despite resistance from Democratic officials. These rulings follow Kennedy’s late August endorsement of Trump and his subsequent effort to remove himself from several battleground state ballots, a move that could have potentially swayed the 2024 election outcome.
Kennedy, who had been running as a candidate under the Natural Law Party, decided to withdraw from the race as his presence on the ballot was seen as potentially harmful to Trump’s campaign. Keeping his name on the ballot could have divided votes and led to an advantage for Vice President Kamala Harris, the current Democratic nominee. “Staying in the race would likely hand the election over to the Democrats,” Kennedy admitted, acknowledging the risk his candidacy posed to Trump’s chances.

In response to Kennedy’s decision, Democrats in several states, particularly Michigan and North Carolina, pushed back. They claimed it was too late for Kennedy to withdraw and argued that his name should remain on the ballots. Michigan’s Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, was among the most vocal opponents of removing Kennedy’s name. Benson’s office stated, “Minor party candidates cannot withdraw, so his name will remain on the ballot in the November election.” Press secretary Cheri Hardmon reinforced this stance, telling Axios that the law prevented Kennedy’s withdrawal after the nomination had been made.
