Toyota is making a dramatic return to Texas after shifting a key part of its truck production to Mexico just a few years ago, announcing a multibillion-dollar investment that will significantly expand its manufacturing footprint in the Lone Star State.
The Japanese automaker revealed plans to invest $3.6 billion into its San Antonio manufacturing complex, where it will construct a brand-new assembly line dedicated to producing the wildly popular Tacoma pickup. The expansion is expected to create approximately 2,000 new jobs while increasing the facility’s annual production capacity by 150,000 vehicles.
For many observers, the announcement marks a stunning reversal of a decision Toyota made in 2020.
