“We had not spoken to President Trump since March of 2016, other than a personal call Joe made to President Trump on the morning after the attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Brzezinski explained. “In this meeting, he was cheerful, he was upbeat, he seemed… interested in finding common ground with Democrats on some of the most divisive issues.”

For those questioning why the couple would meet with Trump after years of tension, Brzezinski responded, “Five years of political warfare has deeply divided Washington and the country. We have been as clear as we know how in expressing our deep concerns about President Trump’s words and actions in the coarsening of public debate. But for nearly eighty million Americans, election denialism, public trials, and January 6th were not as important as the issues that moved them to send Donald Trump back to the White House with their vote.”

She continued, “Joe and I realize it’s time to do something different, and that starts with not only talking about Donald Trump, but talking with him.”

Trump’s response came during an interview with Fox News, where he stated that in order to “Make America Great Again,” a “free, fair, and open media” is essential. He also emphasized his obligation to engage with the press, even those who have been critical of him.

“I received a call from Joe Scarborough requesting a meeting for him and Mika, and I agreed that it would be a good thing if such a meeting took place,” Trump said. The two met on Friday morning at Mar-a-Lago, where the conversation was described as “extremely cordial.”

Trump reflected on the meeting, noting that a wide variety of issues were discussed. “Many things were discussed, and I very much appreciated the fact that they wanted to have open communication,” he said. “In many ways, it’s too bad that it wasn’t done long ago.”

The former president shared that Scarborough and Brzezinski had congratulated him on his “great and flawless campaign, one for the history books,” which he acknowledged as an arduous and historic effort. Trump also revealed that the hosts had strong opinions about his cabinet selections, with some being more favorable than others. Despite these differences, he concluded that the meeting ended on a positive note. “The meeting ended in a very positive manner, and we agreed to speak in the future,” he said.
