This is far from Trump’s first tango with the bloated bureaucracy of UNESCO. He yanked the U.S. out once before in 2017, citing the organization’s blatant hostility toward Israel. Now, with mounting evidence of bias and globalist overreach, Trump is slamming the door once more — and this time, it’s final.
UNESCO’s Long War on Israel
The breaking point? A years-long trend of anti-Israel resolutions and one-sided politics. Back in 2011, UNESCO handed Palestine full membership status, sparking outrage in Washington. Since then, the agency has doubled down on its hostility, labeling Jewish religious sites as “Palestinian World Heritage Sites” and pushing controversial declarations that ignore Jewish history altogether.
One resolution from 2016 stands out in particular — the so-called Occupied Palestine Resolution, which stripped the Temple Mount of its Jewish name and referred to it exclusively by its Islamic title: “Al-Haram al-Sharif.”
“UNESCO was beyond reform,” said Eugene Kontorovich, professor of international law at George Mason University and Heritage Foundation fellow.
“It’s championship of woke and progressive policies that go against American values.”
Even Israeli leadership has had enough. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar hailed Trump’s move as a vital correction:
“Singling out Israel and politicization by member states must end, in this and all professional UN agencies.”
Woke Ideology Meets Its Reckoning
Beyond its bias against Israel, UNESCO has been pushing what many see as a radical left-wing agenda — using U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund progressive programs dressed up as international development.
Among the initiatives raising eyebrows are the 2023 “anti-racism toolkit” and a 2024 campaign called “Transforming MEN’talities,” which critics say veers far from the agency’s original mission of preserving culture and heritage.
White House Deputy Spokesperson Anna Kelly was blunt:
“President Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from UNESCO – which supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes that are totally out-of-step with the commonsense policies that Americans voted for in November.”
It’s not just the ideology that’s problematic — it’s the price tag. After President Joe Biden brought the U.S. back into the organization in 2023, American taxpayers were once again footing a massive bill. While UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay insists the U.S. now only accounts for 8% of the budget, the symbolism of American withdrawal cuts much deeper.
Azoulay tried to save face by claiming she “deeply regretted” the move but conceded it was “anticipated.”
America First — No Apologies
Trump’s latest exit from a global institution is consistent with a broader trend. He’s already pulled out of the World Health Organization and slashed funding to the Palestinian relief agency UNRWA. The message is loud and clear: no more blank checks for organizations that work against America’s interest.
“If you want American taxpayer dollars, you need to serve American interests.”
Rather than a chaotic departure, the Trump team approached the decision with strategic calculation. The 90-day review gave the administration ample time to gather evidence, prepare their case, and lay out a firm justification — leaving critics scrambling for answers.
And the move is getting praise across conservative policy circles. Kontorovich emphasized that the issue wasn’t just Israel:
“It’s championship of woke and progressive policies that go against American values.”
Globalists on Notice
Trump’s withdrawal isn’t just a policy change — it’s a warning shot. International agencies that take American money while undermining U.S. allies and values are officially on notice.
This decision may very well reshape how America engages with the global system. Trump isn’t just cutting ties — he’s cutting through decades of elite diplomacy that prioritized virtue-signaling over sovereignty.
For those still sipping champagne in the UN lounges, the party might just be over.
Because the era of America footing the bill for its own humiliation is ending.
And as Trump sends another globalist darling into meltdown, one thing’s for sure:
This is just the beginning.
