Trump argued that Biden’s Department of Justice didn’t just stop at Cuellar—it went after his wife as well. “Sleepy Joe went after the Congressman, and even the Congressman’s wonderful wife, Imelda, simply for speaking the TRUTH. It is unAmerican and, as I previously stated, the Radical Left Democrats are a complete and total threat to Democracy!” He accused Democrats of being willing to “attack, rob, lie, cheat, destroy, and decimate anyone who dares to oppose their Far Left Agenda.”
He closed the message with a dramatic flourish, telling Cuellar his ordeal was finished. “Because of these facts, and others, I am hereby announcing my full and unconditional PARDON of beloved Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar, and Imelda. Henry, I don’t know you, but you can sleep well tonight — Your nightmare is finally over!”

Cuellar, a Democrat who has long stood apart from his party on immigration, has repeatedly warned that Biden’s border policies are a political disaster—even in areas where Democrats typically cruise. Earlier in 2024, he spoke to Fox News Digital about the rising frustration he saw in his overwhelmingly Hispanic district.
“If they’re looking at the same polls I’ve been looking at, the American public doesn’t like what’s happening,” he said at the time. “I represent an area where it’s almost 80% Hispanic, a lot of Democrats. So, yeah, the polls are showing that it’s an important issue.” He added bluntly that the White House needed to act: “It’s in the president’s best interest politically to come up with a solution on border security.”
But just months after those warnings, Biden’s DOJ hit Cuellar and his wife with sweeping corruption charges—an indictment that many on the Right immediately viewed with suspicion. Prosecutors accused the couple of accepting roughly $600,000 from an Azerbaijan-owned energy company and a Mexican bank, funneling the money through what they described as sham consulting arrangements tied to shell companies linked to Imelda Cuellar.
According to the DOJ, “The bribe payments were allegedly laundered, pursuant to sham consulting contracts, through a series of front companies and middlemen into shell companies owned by Imelda Cuellar, who performed little to no legitimate work under the contracts.” Officials further alleged that Cuellar used his office to influence U.S. policy toward Azerbaijan and to push actions that benefited the Mexican bank.
Trump’s pardon not only wipes the slate clean but also reopens a fierce national debate about the Biden administration’s use of federal power. Was Cuellar a corrupt lawmaker—or was he a Democrat punished for straying from the party line on the border?
With the stroke of Trump’s pen, that question will now be fought in the political arena, not in a courtroom. And for the Biden White House, the timing couldn’t be worse.
